During the heat it is important that dogs and cats drink enough water, physical exertion in the afternoon is limited and they stay in the shade as much as possible.

These are three things your animal cannot do without during the heat:

  • Water! Always bring a bottle of (fresh) water for your dog in your car. A closed bottle of mineral water will last longer than tap water and ensures that you always have a sip for your four-legged friend.
  • Shadow! Arrange a nice shady spot by stretching a sheet or placing a parasol. When the sun is burning you can go for a walk with an umbrella. Your dog can then walk with you in the shade of the screen.
  • Rest! Postpone exercising and cycling with your dog until the weather is cooler. Just take it easy. Also in the water, because during splashing fun you might as well overheat.

A cool place for your cat

Cats often look for a cool place of their own when they get too hot. Make sure your cat has enough shade and can look inside for a cool spot. For example, keep windows and doors closed to keep the heat out as much as possible.

You can also get overheated in the water!

Stimulate your cat to drink water during the heat

Cats are originally desert dwellers and therefore do not drink so much by nature. For their health it is important that cats get enough water, especially if they eat a chunk food that doesn't contain that much fluid. But how do you get them to drink? Click here for five handy tips.

Tip!

Change your dog or cat's water more often when it's warm, because fresh water encourages you to drink it. Does your animal drink badly? If so, you can put some extra water through his food or put it in several places. The more often a dog or cat encounters a water bowl, the more often he will drink!

Protect your animal against sunburn

The sun shines and it blows softly, the perfect conditions to burn. As with humans, UV radiation can also cause damage to dogs and cats. Click here for tips to prevent sunburn.

Pay attention!

Asphalt, tiles and sand can get very hot in the sun. We often don't notice that the surface is (too) hot because we wear shoes, but your animal has to walk over it with its foot soles. Feel with your bare hands how hot it can be on and just above the ground!

Never leave your pet alone in the car!

Do you have any idea how fast your car can heat up with your dog in it? Many people underestimate this danger and it costs dog lives every year. Don't leave your dog in the car, not even for a moment!
