Vacation checklist for your pet

During the summer vacations, many pets go on vacation with us. If you're taking your dog or cat with you, it's good to pay attention to a few things:

• Each country has its own specific requirements. Find out in time what specific rules (such as vaccinations, muzzle) apply in the country of destination. You can check this with the embassy or with the traffic bureau of the country you are visiting.
• Make sure your pet is microchipped and check that the (contact) details on the chip are correct. In addition, attach an address tube or pin to the collar with the address details of your vacation destination.
• Make sure your pet is properly treated against worms, ticks and fleas. Don't forget to bring a pair of tick wrenches. In some countries it is mandatory that your pet is treated by a veterinarian against worms and ticks. Check with the embassy or tourism office whether this also applies to the country you are visiting.
• Ask at the vacation address if animals are allowed.
• Ask whether there’s an increased risk of diseases such as heartworm, babesiosis and leishmaniasis in your vacation area.
• Within the EU a number of rules apply if you want to take your dog with you on vacation. It’s mandatory that your dog gets a rabies vaccination (at least 21 days before departure).
• Think about transporting your animal in the car. Always secure dogs in the car using, for example, a seatbelt and always transport cats in a good safe carrier.

• Poop bags (dog) or a litter box and grit (cat)
• Travel basket, crate or harness
